Milk teeth in children are often overlooked by some parents thinking that milk teeth eventually fall out with or without the development of cavities. Even though permanent teeth will take their place eventually, the milk and baby teeth should remain healthy as long as possible because they serve as a placeholder for the permanent teeth. When milk teeth are lost earlier there is a tendency that the remaining teeth will move in the direction of the empty space which may then cause the following permanent teeth to come out uneven or crooked.

Dental assistants may have different specializations that would determine their scope of practice as well as their dental assistant salary. One of which specialization is in pediatric dentistry wherein their work focuses more on the dental care for infants, children, and teenagers. Pediatric patients have unique dental needs especially since they are still young and their mouths are still on the process of development. Basically, a pediatric dental assistant is required to sterilize and prepare the dental equipments needed in every procedure. They are the ones who assist the dentists during dental procedures by suctioning the saliva of the patients and handing the instruments to the dentist. They should have skills in applying dental sealants and fillings, and they should also be an expert when it comes to working with smaller instruments that will into the mouths of children and infants. It is their responsibility to teach the patients and their guardians regarding the proper way of brushing and flossing their teeth. They are responsible for talking with the guardians regarding the importance of proper dental hygiene in milk and permanent teeth. Children are usually fond of eating starchy and sweet foods and these are often the cause of their cavities, which is why the assistants should stress out the importance of regular brushing and flossing.

Since they are mostly dealing with children, they should enjoy working with patients of such ages. They should know how to handle and communicate with children, especially on patients who are afraid. IT is important that a pediatric dental assistant must have a calm disposition and a child friendly approach for them to be able to successfully build a rapport with their young patients who may be anxious or scared.

Medical Assistant vs. Physician’s Assistant

Are you one of those people who think that a medical assistant and a physician’s assistant are one and the same? The truth is the two medical professions mentioned are totally different and the only thing that makes them similar is the word assistant. The biggest or greatest factors that make these two jobs totally different are the duties each must do and can do. The course of a physician assistant covers handling basic clinical procedures and knowing different medical terminologies. They are also trained and educated on how to handle diagnostic, therapeutic as well as preventive healthcare measure on patients as instructed by the physician. Physician assistants can somehow be compared to nurse practioners but an NP is a few level higher when it comes to the roles that can be performed.

Unlike a medical assistant a physician assistant needs to gain a license to be able to work. The requirements and qualifications of a PA is greater and higher compared to a medical assistant.
